I had the same experience as Bluehue with the measuring bar and mat guide rulers being out of calibration and not adjustable. However, I was able to fix it by adjusting the Guide Rail. The rail is attached to the hinges with two pairs of Phillips head screws threaded into square nuts mounted in an internal channel. On my model, the rail needed to move about 3/32" out to bring both the measuring bar and mat rulers into tolerance. I loosened the screws slightly, pulled the rail out as far as I could, and gently tightened them. This got me to a point where it was accurate, although a little finessing was required to line up the mat guide - basically I had to set it so as to just "kiss" the outside of the increment marker for the desired distance. I then did some fine adjustments to make sure the rail was square. The rail now hangs over the center of the slot instead of lining up with the edge, but this doesn't seem to cause any problems.

This is a first class mat cutter. As a photographer who mats work in quantity for art shows, I have found this machine to be perfect for cutting professional quality mats. The squaring bar and mat guide keep mats square and straight. The measuring scales are easy to read and adjust quickly. When there are multiple mats to cut with the same size borders, use of the production stop really speeds workflow. This is an extremely well made product, and is made in the USA. The instructional DVD is very helpful. Be sure to change blades frequently to keep clean edges on the mats.

Comments about Logan 450-1 Artist Elite Mat Cutter:
Overall I really like this product... I just started taking art classes and when I went to mat a piece that I did I was amazed at the prices charged at my local art supply store. My art is something that I do just for myself and the prices for professional matting is crazy even with that 50% off coupon. I have to say this made my art look great and I am sure it will pay for itself in no time. Now I can paint in whatever size I like and I am not having to stay inside the standard mat sizes to keep cost down. I highly recommend this mat cutter. I hadn't cut a mat in over 30 years (High school) this made it easy and they came out great.

I purchase pictures from [@], mostly for the frames. I also buy good pictures by other artists and put new matting with them on an appropriate frame.

Comments about Logan 450-1 Artist Elite Mat Cutter:
I was tired of paying high prices for mats at my local frame shop so I purchased a Logan Artist Elite Mat Cutter with "free" Dual-Drive Elite point driver. Initially the mat cutter seemed like a high quality instrument but when I started using it I realized that the measurement scales were not calibrated correctly. The measuring bar is off about 3/32". That is about 2 mm. Too much. Because of the way it is designed I cannot adjust it. This is not only a manufacturing flaw, but also a design faux pas. To cut mats now, I must measure and mark each cut beforehand which takes a lot more time. The mat guide calibration is off about a 1/16". I can live with that. Again, I have to make adjustments for this flaw with every cut and it slows me down.
The Logan Dual-Drive Elite point driver is nearly worthless. The points do not enter into the frame far enough and then jams in the gun. I waste 2-3 points for every good shot. I wish I had bought a more expensive Fletcher driver.

Comments about Logan 450-1 Artist Elite Mat Cutter:
I tried to cut good mats but had very little success - maybe one out of 6 was good enough quality to use with my art - and let's not even discuss the attempts to cut a double mat - one was decent the other not so much. I thought practice would make my skills better but that was not to be. Mine is going up on [$]

I would rather have metal set screws on the scale arm and need a square to push the mat into in order to facilitate squaring. We are jury rigging and OK but squaring up has been the hardest thing to do. I am a photographer and now I can afford to mat and frame my prints that have been pending for a while.
